Summertime!

13 July 2010 595 views No Comment

Summertime is the time to be outdoors.  What would childhood be without trips to the beach, sno cones, camping and all those other memorable activities?  But awareness about the harmful effects of the sun’s rays has increased exponentially since we were kids.  Parents now understand that protecting their children from sun damage will have lifelong benefits.   When you and your little ones are ready to hit the pool, keep in mind a few safety tips:

  • Limit your time in the sun and don’t stay out all day.  If possible, make sure that the hours you do go out are not during the peak sunlight hours between 10:00 am – 4:00 pm.
  • Choose a high-quality, high SPF sunscreen and reapply it as often as recommended by the directions.  If you are not sure which sunscreen is right for you, consult your pediatrician.
  • Stay covered using hats, tightly woven knits or cover ups.  Look for shady spots to hang out when you’re not in the water.
  • Stay hydrated!  Just because you’re near the water, or even IN the water, doesn’t mean you can’t get dehydrated.  Drink plenty of fluids if you’re out in the sun.
  • Know your kids’ limits.  Just because the other kids seem to be fine doesn’t mean yours is.  Pay attention to signs of fatigue, irritability, flushed face, excessive sweating, lethargy or any other behavior that means it is time to call it a day.
  • Keep a small, well-stocked first aid kit in your bag.
  • Use common sense.

These are just some basic safety tips, but for more information about sun safety and ways to protect your family, check out these excellent websites:
